Spinal Decompression Therapy Treats Lower and Upper Back Pain

Lower back pain can be caused by poor posture, natural wear and tear, or a traumatic accident injury. If a disc in the lower back becomes misaligned, it can compress nearby nerves. Many patients with low back pain also suffer from sciatica. This painful condition occurs when a herniated disc compresses the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs from the low back down through the legs. Consequently, this nerve compression can cause a radiating pain sensation in the low back, buttocks and legs. Everything from an accidental slip and fall to a traumatic car accident injury can cause sciatica.

If you are suffering from sciatica, you know just how frustrating it is to live with chronic pain. Many of our patients have tried a variety of different medical treatments, including prescription painkillers, but are disappointed with the results. The truth is that as long as a mechanical alignment persists, you will continue to experience pain. Chiropractic adjustments are the most effective treatment for sciatica and a herniated disc. Dr. Stewart may also recommend spinal decompression therapy. This pain-free treatment is a safe and effective way to create space in the spine. By decompressing the vertebra, new space is created which allows a herniated disc to return to its proper position. Spinal decompression therapy provides long-term pain relief by relieving pressure on the nerves.

Many patients with lower back pain also suffer from upper back pain and neck pain. Poor posture can exacerbate muscle strain and trap tension deep within the muscle fascia. Long hours hunched over a computer screen is one of the most common causes of lower and upper back pain. Our therapeutic treatments include ultrasound, cold therapy, interferential electrical muscle stimulation, and moist heat therapy. These different treatments can ease muscle tension and promote internal healing. They help tense muscles in the body relax. We also teach corrective exercises to strengthen the core and improve posture. Ergonomic changes to office furniture, including adjusting seat height and desk position, can also help reduce low back strain.

Chronic lower or upper back pain can cause you to miss out on activities you enjoy most. Non-invasive treatments like spinal decompression therapy are a safe and effective way to manage chronic pain.
