Seasonal allergies affect millions of Americans each year. Unfortunately, most allergy medications offer limited relief for allergy symptoms, not to mention actually preventing these symptoms from occurring in the first place! If you are suffering from common allergy symptoms including a runny nose, nasal congestion, itchy or water eyes, and difficulty breathing, chiropractic care may be able to help. Chiropractic care can help relieve these symptoms by addressing a root problem that may be contributing to your allergies: a spinal misalignment. A properly aligned spine supports a healthy nervous system and immune system, reducing the likelihood that your body will “over-react” to allergens and supporting your health. Our goal at Rutherford Clinic of Chiropractic is to help you enjoy outdoor activities whether or not it’s allergy season!
Our Murfreesboro chiropractor, Dr. Wesley Stewart, understands how frustrating it can be to struggle with allergies. Chiropractic care can help minimize the impact that allergies have on your life by reducing your body’s over-reaction to allergens. During spring allergy season, for example, we breathe in pollen particles. Our bodies consider pollen to be a foreign substance and then mount and over-react to this substance. To defend against the “attack”, our bodies release histamines. Histamines then trigger our runny noses and watery eyes. Over-the-counter allergy medications are “anti-histamines” and work by repressing these histamines in an effort to minimize our allergy symptoms. Chiropractic care is different. Chiropractic care works by addressing underlying spinal misalignments that may be triggering your body’s over-reaction to the allergens.
Chiropractic care works by keeping the musculoskeletal system properly aligned. When the spine is out of alignment, the vertebra can compress nearby nerves. This impacts the central nervous system’s ability to send and receive messages between the brain and the spine. A spinal misalignment can manifest itself in many different ways. Sometimes our symptoms are pain or fatigue. In other cases, the symptoms are our bodies over-reacting to allergens.
A spinal misalignment can occur due to natural wear and tear or an accident injury. When a disc slips out of alignment, for example, this disc can compress nearby nerves. Sometimes, this nerve compression triggers pain, like in the case of sciatica. In other times, this compression impacts the immune system’s ability to easily function. This then causes the body to become overwhelmed by the presence of an allergen, like pollen. Hands on adjustments from Dr. Stewart can bring correct alignment back to the spine. When the spine is correctly aligned, the body is able to function in a state of “ease” rather than “dis-ease”, enhancing all aspects of your health.
In addition to chiropractic adjustments, our chiropractor can also integrate complementary therapies into your allergy treatment. Depending on your health needs, you may benefit from nutritional counseling. Balanced nutrition supports a healthy immune system.
