Scoliosis Issues and Answers at Rutherford Clinic of Chiropractic

If you or a loved one is dealing with scoliosis, you're certainly not alone. Up to 2 percent of the population experiences the most common form of this spinal curvature disorder. Here at Rutherford Clinic of Chiropractic, we're dedicated to helping our patients achieve the best possible outcome through spinal screenings and natural, non-surgical symptom management.

spinal illustration of someone being checked for scoliosis in Murfreesboro, TNMost cases of scoliosis have no obvious cause. A lateral S-curve or C-curve of 20 degrees or more may show symptoms such as unequal shoulder or hip height or one protruding shoulder blade. While most cases cause no significant medical complications, severe cases may cause back, shoulder, pelvic or hip pain, or even difficulty in breathing.

Scoliosis Treatment in Children

Regular spinal screenings are essential for any child or adolescent with scoliosis, as this is the period in which curvature change is most dynamic. Our chiropractor uses state-of-the-art diagnostic methods to identify any changes between one screening and the next. If the spine seems to be undergoing a rapid rate of change, we may want to perform such evaluations every few months. If the spinal curvature is very mild or slow to progress careful observation may be all that is required.

If the spinal curvature exceeds 25 degrees in a patient who is still growing, we recommend a customized, form-fitting brace as an effective means of arresting or minimizing the process. In our opinion, surgery should only be recommended for the most severe cases of scoliosis, and only after other treatment methods have proven unsuccessful.

Ways to Manage Scoliosis Pain

While chiropractic treatment may not actually be able to "cure" a case of scoliosis, it can be highly effective in the management of the various aches and pains that can accompany the disorder. Depending on the patient's symptoms, our chiropractor may prescribe the following pain management options:

  • Chiropractic adjustment - Chiropractic adjustment can relieve pressure on nerves that may produce tingling, numbness or pain, either locally or in other parts of the body.

  • Spinal decompression - Scoliosis can be a factor in vertebral disc compression, bulges and herniation, as well as stresses and strains on the facet joints that articulate the spinal column. Cervical or lumbar non-surgical spinal decompression uses gentle distraction force to help bring the discs back into alignment and relieve pain.

  • Physical therapy - the uneven posture caused by scoliosis can cause muscle groups to become weakened or strained. We can prescribe a combination of corrective exercises, heat, ice and other forms of physical therapy to help scoliosis patients enjoy better spinal support and improved range of motion.
