A migraine headache is a penetrating pain that is localized to one part of the head. A migraine may also be accompanied by other intense physical symptoms including nausea, vomiting, and an extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Severe migraine attacks can leave patients immobilized for days, unable to do anything other than lie down in a quiet, dark room. When a migraine attack occurs, everything can seem overwhelming and unmanageable. Work and personal life can suffer. Even when you are healthy, you may find yourself avoiding activities out of fear that you will experience a migraine.
If you are struggling with migraine headaches, our chiropractor Dr. Stewart can help. Our patient-proven treatments really work. Most importantly, our drug-free treatments are all-natural and non-invasive. While some medications can reduce the frequency and severity of migraine attacks, these medications are not a complete solution. Dr. Stewart’s treatments are different; they provide natural pain relief and support whole body health.
If you suffer from chronic migraines, a mechanical misalignment of the spine may be contributing to your pain. For example, whiplash injuries increase the risk for migraine pain. During a rear-end car accident, the accident’s force abruptly “whips” the cervical spine beyond its normal range of motion. This can cause a permanent misalignment of the neck. In addition to suffering from neck pain, accident victims from Murfreesboro, Walterhill, Blackman, Almaville, Rockvale, Lascassas, Christiana, Kittrell, and Smyrna, TN may also experience reoccurring migraine pain.
Chiropractic adjustments are an effective treatment for reducing the occurrence of migraine headaches. For whiplash victims, adjustments also provide neck pain relief. Adjusting the cervical spine may help reduce tension at muscle pressure points. Reducing tension increases the flow of oxygen-rich blood to the brain, which decreases the risk for migraine headaches. While we are continuously learning about the exact cause for migraines, we do know that environmental triggers play a major role. Common migraine triggers include changes in sleep (missing sleep or getting too much sleep), bright lights and sun glare, dehydration, an abrupt change in barometric pressure and intense stress. Strong smells including secondhand smoke and heavy fragrances can also trigger migraine pain.
Some foods may also trigger migraines. Common trigger foods include red wine and beer, aspartame, too much caffeine, monosodium glutamate (MSG), chocolate, processed foods and salty foods. Skipping meals or fasting can also lead to a dangerous drop in blood sugar levels, which triggers a migraine.
Dr. Stewart works closely with each patient to address the causes for their migraine pain. This is part of our whole body approach to treatment. Not only do we help relieve your pain, our goal is to help prevent it for reoccurring. Lifestyle adjustments and dietary changes can help reduce common triggers. Nutritional counseling plays an important role in treatment. By identifying trigger foods, patients are empowered to proactive take charge of their health.
